Terms for AJ Self Drive hire

Who can hire our vehicles

We accept drivers over the age of 21 and up to the age of 75 subject to the following conditions.

For Drivers 21 – 24 years

  • Driver must have a valid UK licence for 2 years or more
  • Young drivers pay a surcharge of £15 in addition to the hire cost
  • Driver under 25 years must be free from convictions
  • Driver under 25 years must have NO claims in the past 3 years
  • Some vehicles are not available to young drivers (21-24)
  • Additional drivers can be added for £15 per driver

For Drivers 25 – 75 years

  • Driver must have a valid UK licence for 2 years or more
  • 14 and 17 Seat Minibus driver must hold a D1 category on their licence
  • Sorry but 14 and 17 seat minibus hire is not available to drivers aged 70+
  • Driver over 25 must have no more than 6 penalty points (SP/CU/TS)
  • Driver over 25 must have had no more than one FAULT claim in 3 years.
  • Additional drivers can be added for £15 per driver.

What documents do I need?

  • Photo card licence or old paper licence and passport
  • 2 forms of ID with your name and address on within the last 3 months (utility bill, official letter or bank statement)
  • Shared Licence Number (which is case sensitive obtained from www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence). Alternatively we would require your National Insurance number in order for us to view your licence details on-line.
  • If your licence address is different to your current address we would require you to bring your valid passport for us to hold until you return the vehicle.

How do I book a vehicle?

  • Call us on 0121 550 7855 to check availability.
  • Make sure you disclose any penalty points or disqualifications you have on your licence even if they have expired. Certain points and / or disqualifications may result in your hire being cancelled without refund if it is found that the information provided is incorrect.
  • Pay for the hire amount in full to secure your booking.

What do I have to pay on the day?

  • A minimum of £200 security deposit* in cash or by debit card (refundable when vehicle is returned undamaged)
  • Minibus hire requires a minimum £500 deposit*  (refundable when vehicle is returned undamaged)
  • Please note there is a 2.5% surcharge for any payments using a Business Credit Card

*Deposit amount is dependent on the correct information being provided upon hire. We have the right to increase the minimum deposit if undisclosed information is found once licence and eligibility is checked. 

Fuel

Hire cost does not include fuel. You will be required to top up the vehicle to the level indicated on your booking out sheet. Vehicles that are returned lower than indicated are subject to a surcharge of £40 per quarter tank.

AdBlue is a liquid used to reduce the nitrous oxide emissions of diesel engines.
Some of our vehicles require this to operate and is chargeable at a rate of 1p per mile.

Mileage

Your hire price includes a 200 mile mileage wear & tear allowance for each 24 hour period of hire. This is limited to 1000 miles per week. If you exceed the allowance there will be a surcharge at a rate of 15p per mile (including VAT). This is calculated and payable upon return of the vehicle.

Taking the vehicle abroad?

We do allow our vehicles to be taken across Europe however additional insurance is required and cost depends on destination and duration of the hire. If you wish to use this option then please contact us with details of your journey and the length of hire required in order to provide you with a full quotation. Vehicles taken outside of the UK are also subject to a security deposit of £1000 or £1500 for a Minibus.  Please call us for clarification.

European Breakdown Cover

Customers who take our vehicles overseas are also required to arrange RAC / AA or suitable breakdown cover for the duration of the trip and provide written evidence of cover prior to hiring the vehicle.

Vehicle Collection & Returns

  • When you reserve a vehicle with us you will be allocated a time slot to collect. Failure to collect the vehicle at the allocated time may result in a long wait. If you are going to be late please call us on 0121 550 7855
  • If you return the vehicle later than agreed you will be charged a late fee of £25 per hour up to the value of the day rate.
  • You are welcome to bring the vehicle back earlier than your allocated hire term however we do not offer refunds if you choose to return the vehicle early.
  • Please be aware that we DO NOT accept collections or returns of vehicles after 4pm (Monday to Friday) 3pm (Saturday) and 12pm (Sunday). If you arrive after these times to collect or return a vehicle you will be told to return the following day. Please be aware that you will be charged an additional day if the hire is carried over to the following day. If you fail to collect a reserved vehicle on the date agreed you will be required to pay the full hire amount.

Cancellations

  • We do not offer refunds for cancelled hire so please make sure you have the correct date and times before booking.

Additional Information

  • All vehicles are fully covered with comprehensive insurance included in the hire cost
  • Price includes VAT
  • Each vehicle has full RAC breakdown cover in the UK
  • In the event of any accident or damage to the vehicle it is the hirers responsibility to pay the initial £1000 toward repair costs. This is increased to £1500 for our 14 & 17 Seat Minibus.
  • An administration fee of £60 is payable over and above the repair cost.
  • Please note there is a 2.5% surcharge for payments using Business Credit Cards
